What to Eat After Wisdom Teeth Removal, Day by Day

Permitted foods after dental extraction: textures, temperatures, steps J1–J7, foods to avoid and warning signs to prevent alveolite.

Quand manger solide après extraction des dents de sagesse ? Dr Solene Répond

J1–3, prefer soft and cold textures; J3–5, introduce mellow solids if healing is well; in J7, gradual recovery. Avoid hot, crisp, spicy, acid and straw. Mask on the opposite side and let the pain guide the rhythm.

J1 to J3: liquid and soft, cold or lukewarm

Objective: to protect the clot and avoid alveolite.

These first days are decisive: preserving the clot promotes healing and limits pain. Choose cool to lukewarm temperatures to contain inflammation, avoid irritating foods and any suction that could dislodge the clot. Split the sockets, moisturize, and gently clean according to instructions.

Examples: smooth, warm soup, yogurt, compote, purée, smoothies without straw.

  • Soups and smooth, warm, non-hot broths.
  • Wild yogurt, white cheese, compotes without pieces.
  • Pure potatoes or very fine vegetables.
  • Unctuous smoothies served with spoon, never with straw.

J3 to J5: introduce soft solids

Examples: scrambled eggs, very cooked pasta, melted vegetables, very tender fish/meat, banana.

  • Frozen eggs or well-melted omelette.
  • Very cooked pasta, soft rice, soft polenta.
  • Very tender steam vegetables, thick purée.
  • Floconous fish, very tender simmered meat.
  • Mature banana, apples cooked without irritating pieces.

Rules: warm only, small bites, chew opposite side, stop if pain.

Always serve warm. Take small bites, chew on the opposite side of the extraction and progress in steps. If pain, discomfort or bleeding reappear, return one day to more flexible textures before re-entering more consistent foods.

From J7: gradual return to solids

Examples: cooked rice, crustless bread, steamed vegetables, soft meat; crunching reintroduced later.

  • Rice well cooked, semolina, al dente pasta very flexible.
  • Mud bread without crust, mellow cakes.
  • Steam vegetables, textured purées, soft cheeses.
  • Soft meat in small slats, fish, eggs.

Warning signs: increasing pain, bad breath, unpleasant taste, bleeding, fever → consult; suspicion of alveolite.

  • Pain that increases 48–72 hours after the gesture.
  • Fetid Haleine, metallic taste, empty alveole.
  • Persistent bleeding, fever, trismus or diffuse oedema.
  • In these cases, contact your practitioner without delay.

Concrete examples to resume a solid diet

From J1 to J3, prefer smooth, soft and lukewarm textures: puree, compote, yogurt, scrambled eggs or very cooked pasta in small pieces. Mask on the opposite side when possible. Bread, especially toasted or with a hard crust, and pizza remain too abrasive at this stage; their crumbs can stay near the area operated.

From J3 to J5, if pain and swelling decrease, you can test firmer pasta, well-cooked rice, tender fish or crustless mice bread. Start with a small portion and return to softer if the chewing shoots at the wound. Avoid very hot, crispy, spicy or small-seeded foods.

From J7, the recovery gradually expands according to your comfort and the surgeon's instructions. A soft, cooled pizza cut into small bites can be tried before a very crispy dough. The bread can also be reintroduced from soft to hard. Personal tolerance prevails: no date replaces clinical evolution, and increasing pain or bleeding requires stopping and seeking advice.
